Eric Newton

Eric Newton is senior adviser to the president at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. He has developed more than $300 million in grants. Previously, Newton was founding managing editor of the Newseum www.newseum.org, leading the content team at the world's first interactive museum of news. He started out in journalism at California newspapers. As managing editor of the Oakland Tribune www.oaklandtribune.com under Bob www.mije.org/robertmaynard and Nancy Maynard www.mije.org/nancy-maynard, he led the paper to 150 awards, including a Pulitzer Prize. His most popular books include Crusaders, Scoundrels, Journalists and Capture the Moment. A distinguished alumnus of San Francisco State University, he was a Rotary International Scholar at the University of Birmingham, England. His awards include a Peabody as well as honors for advancing the First Amendment, supporting investigative reporting and lifetime achievement in communications..
